Céad Míle Fáilte,

My name is John O`Neill and I am based in Limerick, Ireland. I can be contacted at talk@lendanearsport.com regarding any matters about this site or if you simply just want to give feedback.

About Me:

My background is based in –

  • Strength and Conditioning – (IRFU CCC, IRB Level 1 +2, NSCA & Setanta College  Fundamental Movements for a Child  Level 1)
  • Fitness Coaching (rugby, GAA, soccer) – (REPs Advanced Level 3, ACE Personal Training, NCEF Fitness Instruction, NCEF Activity for Children, NSW Australia Personal training & Fitness Instruction)
  • Currently studying Sport Science – (University of Limerick)
  • I research issues in sport in relation to depression, anxiety, burnout, gambling and psychology issues that arise during injury and the effects of retirement.

Reasons for Site

  • I have seen these issues and problems in many players and coaches that I have been coaching and working with over the last few years.
  • Research indicates to me that there are hundreds and thousands of people who suffer from these deadly symptoms throughout sport and life.
  • Statistics specify that in Ireland alone, 1 in 5 people will suffer from depression at some stage of their life and this number is likely to increase as life and sport becomes a more pressurised field to be involved in.
  • Sport can be a very egotistic venue and it can become a very lonely and isolated place.
  • When a player, athlete and coach are succeeding it is easy for people to get right behind them and celebrate with them, but when things are not going so well, people do not want to have anything to do with them and simply want to forget about them.

Aims of Site:

  • Social media interactive project online.
  • A place for people who suffer from these issues in sport can come to find and share information in order for the first steps of recovery to be taken.
  • Chat forum to communicate with like minded people who have or are struggling with these particular issues.
  • Podcast and Interviews with Athletes, Players and Coaches and all professions within sport discussing their experiences with these problems.
  • Guest Articles, Radio and Video Interviews plus documentaries dealing with and discussing these matters.

Important to Note:

  • Not only for Players and Athlete`s, but for every single person who has a part to play in sport from coaches to the back room staff.
  • I have talked to many coaches and even a physiotherapist whom have suffered as a result of the pressures that are involved in working in all compartments in today’s sport.
  • To me it is important that not only are the players and athletes in a good frame of mind but every person working with them should all be monitored for positive mental health well-being.
  • A club and sport organisation should be operated and conducted with a positive mind set in all departments.

Ultimate Goal:

I feel Ireland and the world is crying out for a service like “Lend An Ear Sport”. I would be delighted if it has a positive impact on “Mental Health” issues in all aspects of sport across Ireland and around the world.

Remember, if you need information regarding any of these issues in sport or just have a general enquiry or comment please get in touch by contacting me at – talk@lendanearsport.com

Go raibh maith agat and remember you are never alone,

John O`Neill
